Stonnewall Inn Legacy: 1969-2024

Stonewall Riots 1969

The Stonewall Inn riots, which took place in New York in 1969, represent a major turning point in the history of LGBTQIA+ rights. This event not only marked the beginning of increased mobilization for equal rights in the United States but also had global repercussions, influencing civil rights movements in many countries, including Belgium. In 2024, the legacy of Stonewall continues to inspire activists, encompassing diverse aspects of the LGBTQIA+ community, including the fetish community.

The riots erupted in response to frequent and often brutal police raids on bars frequented by LGBTQIA+ individuals. On the night of June 28-29, the patrons of the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in Greenwich Village, New York, decided to resist law enforcement. This spontaneous uprising turned into several days of protests and clashes. The accumulated discontent over systemic discrimination and police repression found an explosive expression, catalyzing a broader LGBTQIA+ liberation movement.

The Stonewall riots led to the formation of numerous LGBTQIA+ rights organizations, such as the Gay Liberation Front (GLF) and the Gay Activists Alliance (GAA). These groups advocated for increased visibility and equal rights, organizing protests, rallies, and political actions to promote their cause. The first pride march took place in New York in June 1970, commemorating the first anniversary of the riots and laying the foundation for the Pride parades that are now held worldwide.

Impact in Belgium and for the fetish community

The impact of Stonewall quickly spread beyond American borders, inspiring similar movements worldwide. In Belgium, the first LGBTQIA+ rights initiatives emerged in the 1970s, influenced by the Stonewall events. In 1972, Belgium saw the creation of its first gay organization, the “Centre Culturel de la Jeunesse Gay,” followed by the formation of various activist and support groups.

In 2003, Belgium became the second country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage, after the Netherlands. This legislative milestone reflects the enduring influence of Stonewall on the struggle for equal rights. Additionally, Belgium has enacted laws against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and has allowed adoption by same-sex couples, reflecting a progressive evolution towards equality and inclusion.

An important aspect of the LGBTQIA+ community is the diversity of its subcultures, including the fetish community. Some of its representatives were on the front lines during the riots alongside Marsha P. Johnson. The Stonewall riots also contributed to the visibility and acceptance of these groups within the LGBTQIA+ movement. The fetish community, often marginalized, now finds greater recognition and inclusion.

Fetish events, such as the Folsom Street Fair in San Francisco and its European counterparts like Folsom Europe in Berlin or the Belgian Darklands, but also on a smaller scale the Belgian Sneakers Days in Brussels, are examples of this increased visibility. These events celebrate diversity and sexual expression freedom while reinforcing solidarity within the LGBTQIA+ community.

Current issues & ongoing challenges

In 2024, despite significant progress, many challenges persist for the LGBTQIA+ community. Discrimination and violence against LGBTQIA+ individuals remain a concern in several countries, and restrictive laws continue to exist. In Belgium, although legislative advances have been made, incidents of homophobic or transphobic discrimination and violence still occur, reminding us that the fight for equality is far from over.

Pride celebrations, which trace their origins to the Stonewall riots, continue to play a crucial role in the visibility and mobilization of the LGBTQ+ community. In Belgium, Pride parades attract thousands of participants each year, in Brussels, Antwerp and soon Liège for the first time, reflecting a continued commitment to equality and LGBTQIA+ rights recognition. These events are not only moments of celebration but also platforms to raise public awareness of current issues and to demand rights.

The legacy of the Stonewall riots continues to inspire new generations of activists. Contemporary movements, such as Black Lives Matter, have highlighted the intersections between the fight for Black rights and LGBTQIA+ rights, reinforcing the importance of solidarity and intersectionality in the pursuit of equality. This is now an issue in European migration policy and the Member States will have to take it into account.

In 2024, young LGBTQIA+ activists draw on the history of Stonewall to demand change in their social and political contexts. This historical inspiration fosters increased human rights awareness and mobilization to combat all forms of discrimination and injustice.

The legacy

The Stonewall Inn riots in 1969 were a powerful catalyst for the LGBTQIA+ rights movement, with global repercussions that endure today. In Belgium, as elsewhere, the legacy of Stonewall is manifested through legislative advances, greater visibility and acceptance of sexual and gender diversity, and continued mobilization for equality. The fetish community, once marginalized, also finds increased recognition thanks to this shared history of struggle and resistance.

In 2024, 55 years after the Riots, Pride celebrations and activist actions continue to remind us of the importance of Stonewall as a symbol of resilience and the fight for social justice. The inspiration of Stonewall urges us to continue the struggle for a more inclusive and equitable society where everyone, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity, can live freely and without fear.

If today you can be yourself on the street and be proud of who you are, it’s thanks to Marsha P. Johnson and their siblings 55 years ago. Tomorrow, #BEsneax as a community association defending our rights will continue its fight for more equality but this will only be possible with the support of its members and sister associations. We continue to believe in a better world!
